Join textile artists Alyssa Arney and Elizabeth Flynn in creating a temporary environmental art installation for the Santa Ana River! Join crochet circles here at the Riverside Art Museum or donate knitted or crocheted sweaters, blankets, or small handmade textile pieces in shades of blue.

Community Crochet Circles led by Textile Artists Alyssa Arney and Liz Flynn

Saturday, September 24 and Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 12 noon – 3 p.m.

Textile Artists Alyssa Arney and Liz Flynn will be leading crochet and stitching circles in order to fabricate the environmental art installation There is a River Here. Come learn crochet while constructing pieces for the installation. If you are an experienced knitter, bring your knitting needles and give us some lessons! Feel free to bring yarn in shades of blue to donate. No time to crochet? Please donate cast-off blue knitted or crocheted sweaters or blankets, granny squares, mandalas, rectangles of any size in varying shades of blue by October 21, 2016. Deliver or mail to RAM.

Santa Ana River Cleanup

The Riverside Art Museum is finishing off the Art of Water series with a big splash! Yes, there is a river in Riverside and we will be leading a morning of river cleanup on November 12 at 9 a.m. During the cleanup, you will be treated to a fascinating talk about the history and ecology of the Santa Ana River by Inland Empire Waterkeeper’s Megan Brousseau. Park at Martha McLean-Anza Narrows Park and look for guides.

Stay after the river cleanup to enjoy the Riverside Art Museum’s debut of There is a River Here, a temporary environmental textile art project facilitated by textile artists Alyssa Arney and Liz Flynn, curate by Carolyn Schutten, and co-created with the community. Patricia Locke Dawson of Santa Ana River Trust will be on hand to talk about the revitalization of the Santa Ana River. This project will be a stunning yarn bombing of several boulders in order to create an ephemeral river of blue in the natural landscape. If you would like to help create the textiles to temporarily cover the boulders, please donate knitted or crocheted blankets or sweaters in shades of blue to the Riverside Art Museum or participate in our crochet circles on September 24 and October 22.
